Recurring white ink sedimentation in T-shirt direct-to-garment printers stems from a lack of maintenance of the white ink circulation system.

Many professionals who use T-shirt direct-to-garment printers encounter the problem of white ink sedimentation. Cleaning the printheads and replacing the ink may temporarily alleviate the issue, but after a period of use, sedimentation, ink clogs, and uneven ink output will recur. Most people attribute the problem to ink quality, but they overlook the fact that the root cause often stems from neglecting routine maintenance of the white ink circulation system.

White ink primarily consists of white powder, which naturally settles when left undisturbed—a normal physical property. The core function of a T-shirt direct-to-garment printer’s white ink circulation system is to continuously keep the ink flowing, thereby reducing powder buildup and maintaining a uniform ink consistency throughout the ink path. If the circulation system is not properly maintained and the flow rhythm is disrupted, sedimentation issues will recur.

A common oversight in daily maintenance is improper startup and shutdown practices. Some operators simply cut off the power and shut down the machine after it stops running, leaving the white ink in the ink path to sit stagnant for extended periods. When the machine is shut down overnight or left in standby mode for long periods without circulation, powder gradually accumulates in the tubing, ink bags, and ink reservoirs. Over time, this forms solidified sediment that enters the ink path and clogs the printheads when the machine is restarted.

Inadequate cleaning of circulation components is another frequent issue. Over time, fine ink residue accumulates on the circulation pump, filter cartridges, and the inner walls of the tubing. If left uncleaned for extended periods, this can cause minor blockages in the tubing, slowing the ink circulation flow rate and disrupting the overall circulation. When ink flow stagnates in certain areas, the rate of powder sedimentation accelerates, not only causing sedimentation but also resulting in uneven white ink coverage during printing.

In addition, many users overlook the need for regular replacement of filtration consumables. Filter cartridges are consumable parts; over time, their pores become clogged with ink residue, reducing filtration efficiency and affecting overall circulation pressure. When ink flow is obstructed, white ink cannot circulate effectively, causing sedimentation problems to worsen and increasing the likelihood of printhead failures.

To address these recurring white ink sedimentation issues, there is no need to frequently replace the ink; proper maintenance of the circulation system is sufficient. During short-term equipment downtime, keep the circulation system running at a low speed to maintain ink flow. After a long period of inactivity, first activate the circulation mode to flush the entire ink path before resuming printing operations. Regularly disassemble and clean the tubing and ink reservoirs to remove residual ink deposits, and replace filter components on schedule to ensure unobstructed ink flow.

White ink sedimentation is not an intractable problem; it is mostly the result of long-term neglect of maintenance. By performing routine maintenance on the white ink circulation system and maintaining a stable flow in the ink path, you can significantly reduce white ink sedimentation, ensure more stable ink delivery from the T-shirt direct-to-garment printer, and minimize daily malfunctions and consumable waste.
