However, when customizing designs on dark-colored or high-saturation fabrics, an additional step—printing a white undercoat—is required. Many beginners are puzzled by this and don’t understand the purpose of this step; some even view white underprinting as an unnecessary process and want to skip it to simplify the workflow. In fact, white underprinting is the core process in digital printing on dark-colored garments, directly determining the color rendering and overall texture of the finished product.
To understand the role of the white underprint, one must first understand the color-rendering principles of digital printing inks. The colored inks used in direct-to-fabric digital printing are transparent and lack inherent opacity. When sprayed onto the fabric’s surface, these inks overlay the fabric’s base color to produce the desired hue, relying on the base color to bring out the corresponding color effect. This can create a noticeable sensation of foreign material when worn next to the skin and may cause the ink layer to crack after repeated washing. Professional printing techniques fine-tune the thickness of the white ink based on the fabric’s shade and the design’s area, achieving a thin yet even base coat that ensures accurate color reproduction while preserving the fabric’s breathability and softness.
Furthermore, not all dark-colored garments require the same standard for the white undercoat; differences in fabric material and weave texture can affect how well the white ink adheres. Cotton fabrics have good absorbency, allowing for better adhesion of the white ink; blended fabrics with a denser weave require adjustments to the undercoat parameters to meet dyeing requirements.
