How to Handle and Store DTF Transfer Films for Optimal Results
Direct-to-film (DTF) transfer films have revolutionized the world of custom apparel printing. By allowing you to print vibrant, full-color designs onto virtually any fabric, DTF transfers offer a versatile and efficient solution for creating stunning graphics. However, to achieve optimal results, it is crucial to handle and store DTF transfer films properly. This comprehensive guide will provide you with the essential knowledge and techniques for ensuring the longevity and effectiveness of your DTF transfer films.
Handling DTF Transfer Films
Before Printing
Unroll and condition: Before using a new roll of DTF film, unroll it and let it relax for 24 hours. This allows the film to adjust to the surrounding temperature and humidity, minimizing the risk of wrinkles or creases during printing.
Check the film: Inspect the film for any visible defects, such as scratches, tears, or air bubbles. If any imperfections are found, discard the affected section of the film to prevent contamination or print errors.
During Printing
Correct orientation: Ensure the film is correctly loaded into the printer with the printed side facing down. Improper orientation can result in poor print quality or damage to the film.
Optimal temperature: Maintain the printer’s temperature within the recommended range for the specific DTF film being used. Too high or too low temperatures can affect the transfer process and cause issues with adhesion or image transfer.
Roller pressure: Adjust the printer’s roller pressure to the appropriate setting for DTF transfer films. Excessive pressure can crush or damage the film, while insufficient pressure can lead to incomplete transfer.
Storing DTF Transfer Films
Short-Term Storage
Room temperature: When not in use, store transfer films at room temperature (68-77째F or 20-25째C) in a dry, dust-free environment.
Airtight packaging: Protect transfer films from moisture and dust by keeping them in the original packaging or airtight containers.
Away from sunlight: Store transfer films away from direct sunlight or UV radiation, which can degrade the film’s adhesive properties.
Long-Term Storage
Controlled temperature: For long-term storage, transfer films should be kept at a constant temperature between 59-68째F (15-20째C). Fluctuating temperatures can cause condensation and damage to the film.
Controlled humidity: Maintain a relative humidity level of 50-60% to prevent moisture absorption and adhesion issues.
Sealed containers: Store transfer films in vacuum-sealed bags or airtight containers to protect them from moisture, dust, and pests.
Additional Tips
Handle with care: Avoid touching the printed surface of the transfer film as oil from fingers can interfere with the transfer process.
Use transfer tape: Remove the backing of the transfer film carefully and apply transfer tape to the back of the image before pressing it onto the fabric.
Proper pressing techniques: Follow the recommended pressing temperature, time, and pressure for the specific DTF transfer film and fabric combination.
Post-processing: Allow the transferred image to cool completely before removing the transfer tape. This helps ensure proper adhesion and prevents smearing or discoloration.
